In 1904, Mary McLeod Bethune launched a revolution with just $1.50 and a vision. She didn’t wait for permission to build a sanctuary for Black students; she built it herself, fueled by brilliance, tenacity, and the support of her community.
Today, we are thrilled to announce that our very own founder, Nicole, has been selected to join the 2026 McLeod Society Fellowship.
This prestigious fellowship carries forward the torch lit by Mary McLeod Bethune. It is designed to connect and empower the nation’s most visionary Black school founders—leaders who are moving beyond traditional models to expand true educational freedom for families across the country.
Building on a Century of Excellence
Just as Bethune’s schools were sustained by the deep-rooted belief that Black students deserve pathways to lifelong success, NABML was founded on the principle that local leaders are the best architects of their children’s futures. Being recognized by the McLeod Society is a testament to the work we are doing to start, sustain, and scale the next generation of community-led microschools.
“I am honored to join this network of leaders who understand that educational freedom isn’t just a goal—it’s a necessity,” says Nicole. “To walk in the footsteps of a pioneer like Mary McLeod Bethune is a reminder that when we build for our community, we build for the future.”
The Road Ahead
Over the coming year, Nicole will represent NABML in a series of strategic convenings, from virtual leadership training to the national convening in New Orleans this June. This opportunity will directly fuel our mission, bringing new resources, national connections, and strategic insights back to our member founders.
We are incredibly proud of this milestone. As we celebrate this recognition, we remain focused on the work at hand: ensuring that community-led excellence is no longer the exception, but a national standard.
Congratulations, Nicole!
