Our Model for Change

Moving beyond traditional funding to a model where success is reinvested back into the community

The Blueprint for Community-Led Ownership

NABML provides the resources, professional network, and strategic support required to Start, Sustain, and Scale high-quality community-led microschools.

The Three-Phase Lifecycle

We meet our leaders where they are, providing a structured pathway from a founder’s vision to a lasting community institution.

1

START

We identify high-potential leaders and provide the toolkit to go from idea to launch.

Operational Excellence: Mastering the business of school, from legal governance to fiscal sustainability.

Academic Rigor: Designing future-focused curricula that prioritizes mastery and exceed national standards.

2

SUSTAIN

We ensure that community-led schools aren’t just a moment, but a permanent pillar of the educational landscape.

Strategic Advocacy: Aggregating data and success stories to educate policymakers and protect the right to innovate.

Impact Measurement: Utilizing data to prove that our schools drive superior academic outcomes for students.

Community Wealth Building: Helping founders anchor their schools as permanent economic assets through real estate and local job creation.

3

SCALE

Once a model is proven and stable,  integrating founders into a national ecosystem of excellence.

The National Directory: Increasing visibility to connect families with high-quality educational options.

Strategic Growth Funding: Facilitating access to expansion grants to help schools move into permanent, community-owned homes.

Peer Learning Networks: Direct access to a national community of founders for resource sharing and collective problem-solving.

The Founder Reinvestment Commitment

NABML is built on Reciprocal Growth. We build a permanent cycle of opportunity where today’s success funds tomorrow’s innovation.

1

The Seed

We deploy $30,000 in intellectual to ensure every school opens on a foundation of excellence.

2

The Success Share

Once operational and collecting tuition, founders commit 2.5% of gross revenue back to the NABML. This ensures the support system remains manageable and tied directly to the school’s success.

3

The Cap

Once the initial $30,000 value is recovered, the pledge ends. The school remains a permanent NABML partner with 100% revenue retention.

3

The Multiplier

Recovered capital is immediately redeployed to seed the next community leader, ensuring our movement remains independent and self-sustaining.

The brilliance already exists in our neighborhoods. Our job at NABML is to surround that brilliance with the capital, advocacy, and network required to turn a local pilot into a permanent legacy. True educational freedom requires more than just a seat at the table; it requires owning the table itself.

Meet our Founders

Understanding the Model

NABML is built on Reciprocal Growth. We don’t just seed schools; we build a permanent cycle of opportunity where today’s success funds tomorrow’s innovation.

No. You retain 100% legal and operational ownership. Our "Success Share" is a reciprocal reinvestment in the ecosystem, not an equity stake.

No. NABML is a supportive partner, not a governing body.

We believe the most effective schools are community-led, meaning your board should be comprised of the parents, educators, and local leaders who are directly invested in your students.

Additionally, we do not mandate a specific curriculum. One of the greatest strengths of the microschool movement is the diversity of models—from Montessori and Classical to Afrocentric and STEM-focused

A boss dictates your daily decisions and demands compliance; a partner provides the tools you need to achieve your own goals. At NABML, we don’t tell you how to run your school; we provide the national infrastructure and expert support that makes your local leadership possible.

No. We believe that community-led is exactly that: the community defines the culture.

  • We support founders across the entire spectrum—from Afrocentric and Social Justice models to Classical, Faith-based, and Traditional environments.

  • Our role is to ensure your school is legal, safe, and sustainable, not to tell you which values to center.

The Historical Context: Black families are the fastest-growing demographic in the microschool movement, yet Black founders have historically faced the steepest barriers to capital, facilities, and legal protection. We chose this name because we are unashamedly committed to closing the resource gap for the leaders who are currently on the front lines of educational sovereignty.

The Functional Reality: Being "Black-led" is our identity, but "Community-led" is our model.

  • We are a hub for innovation: We exist to ensure that Black educators—who have often been sidelined by traditional systems—have the national infrastructure they need to build schools that reflect their own community’s values.

  • We are a "Big Tent": While our name reflects our primary focus, our tools (The Founder’s Playbook, State Roadmaps, and NABML Ops) are designed to empower any leader who believes that families, not systems, should be in the driver’s seat of education.

The Bottom Line: We aren't here to tell Black leaders how to be Black; we are here to make sure they have the power to be Leaders.

We don’t just provide a membership; we provide a "business-in-a-box" infrastructure. If a founder were to procure these services independently on the open market, the costs would easily exceed $30,000:

  • Legal & Regulatory Setup ($5k–$7k): Custom operating agreements, state-specific "sanctuary" filings, and liability insurance navigation.

  • Operational Systems ($10k+): Access to NABML Ops, including student management software, automated billing, and back-office administrative support.

  • The NABML Standard Certification ($5k): A rigorous, B-Corp style national accreditation that unlocks institutional funding and family trust.

  • Venture Philanthropy Coaching ($10k): Direct strategic advising from leaders like Nicole and our executive team to ensure your model is financially sustainable.

The Difference: Other models charge you a fee to join their club. We make a $30,000 investment in your school’s infrastructure so you can focus on teaching while we handle the "boring" (but expensive) back-office work.

Once your school has saved or generated $30,000 through our systems, you have officially reached the "Sustainability Milestone." * You Graduate to "Scale" Status: You move from an emerging founder to a veteran leader in our network, gaining access to facility expansion grants and national representation.

  • The "Pay-it-Forward" Model: At this stage, your school’s participation in the ecosystem helps fund the next $30,000 "launchpad" for a new founder. Your success literally fuels the growth of the entire movement.

  • Total Sovereignty: You always own your school. Recouping the value simply means the "startup phase" of our partnership is complete, and we move into a long-term strategic alliance.
